I know someone who’s adjacent to the maps project—they meticulously document coordinates, reference frames, and projections. I’ve gotta wonder if this is optimized for “what the average person would think looks right.”
I truly can't imagine an "average person" looking at this and thinking "yeah, that's the direct route to get there". (And even if some think that, I'd argue that educating them would be more helpful than reinforcing a false idea.)pic.twitter.com/DXIEpafF4C

Maybe it was "pretty" (according to some definition) back when they still used a planar projection at this scale. They obviously put some effort into creating a path that "looks straight" on their planar projection. But using this path on a sphere is just an obvious bug.pic.twitter.com/gFZyInuSHM
