I should just burn it all down and start something completely fresh. I always thought CFD combustion models are super fascinating. Maybe I'll do that next. Or maybe I'll just drop off the grid, get a regular job, and write EDA software just for me and nobody else. Fuck FOSS EDA.
I co-founded @symbiotic_eda because I wanted to be able to work on open source tools. Now I'm facing pressure to make my work closed source. I'd rather do something else completely.

Well, it’s open source and it’s your intelectual property. Fork it into another project and let the original be closed and die. Worked for Jenkins and a couple other OSS.
I see two main options to get paid for open source work
1) companies depend on the open source software and pay your team to maintain / extend
2) you use your open source software to provide services or to build closed source artifacts for customers and that subsidizes open source development
variant of option 1 is patreon etc to enable small contributors to support the work

I don't know your full situation (I saw the DARPA snub), but I can tell you your work truly is world-class. I've studied under some of the best minds in the FPGA world, and yosys is up there with anything else that's come out of academia (and ended up in industry). Keep going. 
I think this aggravating outcome is common and I see no solution. Maybe semi-close it? Ship obfuscated source or binaries-only and offer a source license to subscribers?
I'd rather do something else than go that route. We have a bit over a year left to get some cash flow going to keep the company alive. I hope we can do that without sacrificing what we created the company for in the first place...
