I'd look at /etc/pam.d/lightdm And compare it with other files in pam.d ...
What tha frack!? It looks like LightDM is not setting my groups when logging me in. Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it? (This is on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS after a fresh reboot.)pic.twitter.com/3mUQdbOIFd

Thanks! That got me on the right track.. It was this weird issue: https://askubuntu.com/a/1059997/274969 … Commenting out the kwallet PAM modules solved it.
