Oh! Someone actually wrote a parametric involute gears generator in OpenSCAD. See, that's exactly the kind of work I mean in the OP. On the one hand this is truly awesome and breathtaking in the best possible way, but on the other one it is also a bit horrifying..

It uses an involute gear library from GregFrost. But the coolest thing about it (I think) is the technique I developed for colouring the parts in the presence of cutaway.
