Oh! Someone actually wrote a parametric involute gears generator in OpenSCAD. See, that's exactly the kind of work I mean in the OP. On the one hand this is truly awesome and breathtaking in the best possible way, but on the other one it is also a bit horrifying..
Yeah, it’s not the world’s easiest programming language! But pretty powerful.
It uses an involute gear library from GregFrost. But the coolest thing about it (I think) is the technique I developed for colouring the parts in the presence of cutaway.
Oh, plus it animates (even cut-away) with everything turning and meshing correctly.
