I have kind of the same dilemma with wxmaxima. I like maxima as a language also. but not many people do.
My recurring IPython dilemma: Jupyter notebooks are much easier to share with people who just want to look at the results, but I am much more productive in Spyder. I used to have a spyder to ipynb flow, but that was only for an older version of ipython notebook.

I haven't used Maxima in maybe 6 years. That was when I found sympy. Unfortunately sympy isn't as good as I originally thought and now I'm just frustrated and am mostly avoiding complicated symbolic math. (Sympy is good enough for doing multivariate differentiation for me.)
