I spend most of today in bed with a cold watching SciFi TV shows. Dumbest McGuffin so far: A device that sends messages one-way to the future.

Funny enough: The device fails but later in the season it is revealed in a deus ex machina moment that the recipient got the message anyways because of a built-in fail-safe. Completely unironically.
