They might have been asked a few times now by their customers how to add custom instructions and got frustrated? ;) But you are probably right it was probably to the marketing Departement that does not know what they are talking about.

They make ok points on the maturity of the ecosystem. But time will take care of that. Tool coalescence is not a big deal though. Are they thinking that without Keil you can’t live? And GCC is not enough? This all makes me ask more questions :D

I think their point is: if you add custom instructions, the entire ecosystem falls apart because nothing is compatible anymore and compilers have to support each variations. There will be as many flavors of RISC-V as there is vendors. This is also my biggest fear with RISC-V.

Even the customization being an extension? I don't believe it. As soon as the compiler is not emiting the instruction... Do you guys see the market avid for customization like that?
