Hdmi protocol is full of back and forth and some security negotiatons. So this wouldn’t work. It’s not a simple one way stream of data :-)
That's not true. There is only back-and-forth on the i2c bus embedded in the same cable. The actual hdmi protocol has no handshake and no return channel.

My telly can control my Apple TV over the hdmi. So obviously the data flows both directions

A HDMI cable contains TMDS for video, and i2c for the low speed DDC stuff, a pin that is shared for CEC, HEC, and audio return, a ground pin, a +5V pin and a hotplug detect pin that's also used for HEC.
