Haha. What I like most about this obstinate nonsense is that weather forecasting in the modern sense did not exist before mid to late 19th century, but the word "news" already existed in middle english.
Also, "sport" used to be just an abbreviation of "disport" (recreational activity) in middle english, so nothing one would report on. Pro sports in the current sense was not a thing in the middle ages, and acronyms were extremely uncommon (and were never used like regular words).

aha, this makes spanish 'deportes' suddenly make more sense, and it's easy to semantically feel how 'disport' (away-carry) and 'diversion' (away-flow) and 'distraction' (away-pull) all kinda convey unseriousness/fun a similar way. neat!
