So, for ‘The Public Archaeology of Treasure’ I’m going to talk a little about ‘early medieval treasures and strategies for engagement’, based on my experience running this twitter feed and my blog over the last few years :) On the whole I rarely use the term… 1/15

Image of two tweets of early medieval 'Treasures' - I rarely use the term except when it is the title of a group of objects.

A socketed axe of Sompting type from the Llyn Fawr metalwork phase (earliest Iron Age; c 800-600BC), placed within a waterhole from Shepperton, Surrey. The axe was still functional when it was deposited and there is little doubt that it was a ritual offering.

Day 31: Why Archaeology? Hard question with a simple personal answer: it’s what I wanted to do since the age of 5.

Day 30: Environment. This is an early morning view from Rotbav, a Bronze Age site in Transylvania were and I excavated some years ago. The idyllic lakes however were artificially made in the 1970ies, in prehistory there was a marshy landscape.

And related to the above point: Eating habits, drinking too much or no alcohol, clothes, tattoos, sexual orientation, „being to weak for fieldwork“... I have seen all of that and much more become the topic of „jokes“ during excavation. Resist.

Day 29: resist. Fieldwork can be harsh at times. This is me working, or trying to, during a minor sandstorm.

Day 28 of : Breakages The Uruk Warka Vase has a turbulent history of breakages. It dates back to 3200 BC and broke already in antiquity but was repaired back then. During the 2003 invasion of Iraq the vase was stolen and later returned broken into 14 pieces.

Day 27: movement. Moving things = moving people? This Bronze Age axe type is located mainly to the east of the Carpathians, but a few spread to SE Transylvania. It’s found in settlements of the Noua Culture, which is presumed to migrate into this region in the LBA

Day 25: Storytime. In Seddin, NE Germany, folklore had it that a big mound contained the ashes of a king, in a metal urn put in a clay vessel inside a stone chamber. The Bronze Age mound was excavated in the early 20th century. What was found was - exactly that.
