I think the three most critically-acclaimed games of the year so far - Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime - being rehashes of old games proves this point and should be a signal to AAA. It's not because they're beloved existing IP, there's abandoned design here which works

Still playing a lot of games from the PS1/PS2/PS3 generations makes me realise there's a lot of design philosophies which have effectively been abandoned by modern AAA games, sometimes to their detriment.
