one part of me hopes that EU will decide something like that all IOT must be flashable

Yeah i also feel that strong regulations are our best hope to prevent that kind of stuff happening... not ideal... yet more pragmatic. We are heading into a world of hyper fragilibilty where people are finding it normal to replace stuff after 3-5 years.

At least my old 70s wired AMP and speakers don't need any "firmware updates". The joys of modern technology.

If there was an open-source platform for IoT (I guess it exists but anyway) and something like chromecast with a good form factor that could be put into say a radio or a speaker... Then the radio could ignore things like protocols (bt/airplay/chromecast).

That small thing could be replaced to get new protocols that require more than firmware update, but speaker/TV could be kept. Smart TVs should be dumb with such a small device that make it smart so smart can be replaced. Apple-TV could come in this form factor and inserted in TV

I more or less broadly refuse to buy internet connected gadgets. No need to throw away simple appliances because they have outdated software instead of buttons and cables.
