I'm not talking classical as in some elaborate baroque palace. I mean classical as in the following:

Besides, don't you think it'll be easier to get the general public on-board with lots of new housing if it looks like the building on the left, instead of the one on the right?

sure, but one cannot build a city out of 'uniqueness' alone. if that's what architects chase, you will get a lot of grey glass office towers and aluminum-sided condos for every Space Needle. a lot of cities lost their Union Stations. it might be more precious than you think.

Guess what. The Nazis hated ornamental, classical architecture, especially the Beaux Arts and Romanesque schools. Below, a selection of Nazi-designed buildings. No ornament, no detail, no colour. They do resemble postwar Brutalism though, there is that.

The problem is that there *isn't* much diversity in design. Ornamental styles have been almost completely ejected from architectural schools, all that remains is maintenance of existing buildings. How many architects today would, or could, create the well-loved places below?

You're quite right. Fascist architecture takes a few small cues from classic proportions, but strips off all detail, ornament, colour and balance. 1: Florence, Italy, 1934 2: Rome, Italy, 1938 3: Braunschweig, Germany, 1937 4: Rugen, Germany, 1936

    Definitely neo-classical.

It must take a lot of work to never make a single nice building in one's entire career.

LMAO, I don't even live in America. The Met Breuer looks like a flak bunker.

Pretty much. The digital rendering bait-and-switch is so old, it's amazing that anyone still falls for it.

Because without a style mandate, for much of the last sixty years, this is what the US Federal government has gotten:

I understand the objection. But one has to start somewhere - at least with a style that is well-liked. Federal buildings have been, in many cases....not very considerate of their local communities at all. (Most recent purpose-built major US federal building, San Fran, 2007)

This is a library project he's Associate Principal on. This is what he wants to build. No wonder a mandate for a style is threatening.

No need to tell. We can simply show.

The Met Breuer, awarded for design in 2016 by AIA New York. Dang, AIA, you live like this?

Logan Center for the Arts. Awarded by AIA in 2017 for design. I'm detecting a pattern here guys.

Without a style mandate, people design hideous vertical bunkers, like the San Francisco Federal Building below. Won a design award from AIA San Francisco in 2008. What specific community does this grim building serve? A hive of depressed robots?

Because good architecture is actually quite easy and straightforward, so there's a lot of people who can only justify their positions by making things more complicated and frustrating. Below: the simple alternative possibility for this site
