⭐BEHOLD!⭐ The world's first uncompromisingly immortal Pokémon Crystal cartridge! It'll never lose its save – even when the battery runs out, you can keep playing with your save and Pokémon friends as healthy as ever. More info for if you want to immortalize your carts later!

The innards of a Pokémon Crystal cartridge, with a mysterious but cute little white daughter board attached in the middle. That board is the FRAM Signal Sorcerer!
    A close-up view. Man, it's such a cute board…

Happy new year from Asakusa! I ate a fish on a stick!!!

The gate of Sensō-ji, the big temple in Asakusa, ft. ginormous lantern.
Countless food stalls in front of the temple. Oh man, it's beautiful…
A whole fish on a skewer. After this, I ate it in one bite. One bite, I tell you!

  5. Root Letter: Last Answer, a revamp of a mystery visual novel I've been keeping an eye on with a LIVE-ACTION RECREATION MODE was released in English to no fanfare at all? And it's on sale for… 40 more minutes!? Man, market your VNs harder! This is so cool!

An illustrated anime dude looks surprised holding a chocolate orange.
In the live-action recreation, he looks SO STUPID, and his mouth has chocolate all around it, but it's the best.

For the first time, courtesy of yours truly, the hints to The Nightmare of Druaga's secrets are all in English! I've wanted to play it forever, and when I realized there's no way to play as intended in English, I had only one option: make it myself. (4/4)

The translation sheet. It's got a quaint parchment-colored background, and is decorated with colorful sprites from the original arcade game. It turned out really nicely!

Western critical reception was mixed – partly because roguelikes weren't yet understood, but also because these hints… were *missing*. Arika just didn't translate 'em. In the 15 years since, there's been no translation of the hints. Not even a fan-made one. …Until now!!! (3/4)

The opening of floor B5 of the second dungeon of The Nightmare of Druaga in Japanese. A hint is displayed: "Let fortune shine upon the inquisitive."
The same scene in the English version. There just… isn't any hint. In its place is only empty space.

In a captivating mechanic, and a callback to the original, the game featured obscure secrets on each floor, to which you got enigmatic hints: from the simple "Strike two foes down at once", to the obtuse "Seek the blessed number" or "This is a sanctuary for blood oranges". (2/4)

In 2004, the deceptively historically important The Nightmare of Druaga: Fushigino Dungeon was released. A reboot of the influential Tower of Druaga series started in '84, it was also the third Mystery Dungeon (and the first sort of under that name) released in the West. (1/4)

  12. I love that "regular nerdy-lookin' bespectacled dude" is a valid aesthetic for becoming one of the coolest bands in Japan. (Pictured are the lead singers of Quruli, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and Sambomaster, all of which are or have been huge and the absolute pinnacle of cool.)

Shigeru Kishida from Quruli. He looks a bit weathered and worn, in the coolest way.
Masafumi Gotoh from Asian Kung-Fu Generation. Looks completely normal; belts out some of the sweetest refrains you've ever heard.
Takashi Yamaguchi from Sambomaster. He makes going all out in the uncoolest way supremely cool somehow.

  13. ROM hacking can be harsh on the ol' tweets. You'll be working for days on end, and make huge progress, but still have naught to show until it all comes together. Unless you like seeing screenshots depicting FONT COMPRESSION, BAYBEE (this was actually super exciting to figure out)

A Japanese font from a PlayStation 1 game. In the background, some inscrutable compression code can be seen. It's not very action-filled, but such is the plight of the ROM hacker.

If you want to know what Kojima was actually trying to communicate in that tweet, here's my attempt at a de-mangled translation (and for the record, I've been credited as the lead designer/writer/producer on a team project or two, but have never supported the idea of auteurism)

  21. I love ROM hacking – it's the only discipline in which you can see screens like this and go "yes, perfect" (since the particular symptoms the error exhibits tell you how things work). Well, that and maybe making creepypasta.
