The title means “The Summer when Hikaru Died”. That's the second most powerful title I've heard this year! Though it's technically BL, it's free of genre tropes and potentially uncomfortable relationship dynamics, so it's a good read even if that's not your genre.

Quotation marks in Japanese don't always indicate direct quotes, especially in media. It's very unlikely that he said "a certain organization," he probably just named it. Re last question, yes.

The localization process should not be "translator does rough translation then editor cleans it up into something readable" 😭 A good translator is also a good writer! Please! Editors should not be doing that much heavy lifting, they're there to elevate the prose not fix it!

Cherry Tree High is 50% off until it gets delisted forever in 3 days, so I recommend getting on it stat. In a blog post, the developer explained they won't take on the publishing rights because 1) its hard to maintain an RPG Maker XP game,and 2) it's not selling after 10 years.

Your boy (me) is translating this! I've been reading oodles of Agatha Christie in order to be able to get the voice just right. It's a feminist detective manga with a historical setting – I've rarely been so excited to work on anything. And now it's official!!!

I highly recommend Chi if you like: • Historical fiction, • Unusual story structures, • Characters talking about philosophy, • Scientific plot twists, and • Crying. But deffo not if you're sensitive to: • Gore, • Torture, • Misanthropy, or • Criticism of Christianity!

This manga – Chi.: Chikyū no Undō ni Tsuite (“Tellus: On the Subject of the Earth's Orbit”) – won me over. It's about the battle between astronomers and the Catholic Church in medieval Poland. I knew when this one panel took up half a page – and it was an actual plot development.

A man dressed as some sort of fancy knight looks dramatic and says, straight into the proverbial “camera”: “Moveable type.”

Almost every time I get interviewed or do some translation event, I note that it is nigh on impossible for translators to consult the manga artists we’re translating bc of byzantine industry issues, so it’s pretty wild to see people out here claiming you can just DM them.

In the new Konjiki no Gash 2 chapter, there were a couple of panels that show cards with some weird glyphs on them that seemed, based on the presence of ワイグ's card, to correspond to Japanese syllables. Red on this chart is pure speculation.

One thing I miss about Japan: its domestic movies. The country has a vibrant film scene, with countless movies coming out each year, many unapologetically weird – most of which won't be remembered, but that's beautiful. It's a lively culture that allows trying odd things.
