Today’s Sinocism excerpted an interesting speech by Kevin Rudd on the last central foreign affairs work conference. It sure looks to me that Xi and the ccp are feeling more confident by the day that the us is in deep, terminal decline

Few stories can match "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" for viscerally horrible images that one can never forget. RIP.

Worth noting that despite the eye-popping rise in last weekend's Nikkei poll, its impact on the average was limited, not least because its sample size was only 990 respondents. (By comparison, Asahi's June poll had 1999 respondents and showed Abe government at -7 net.)

I updated the JPP opinion poll moving average yesterday: . After two months of net negative approval, the Abe government has basically drawn even.

You know Trump is frightening when even Chinese international relations scholars- yes, really - are complaining about how Trump treats US allies, at the . That’s fairly eye-opening.

In its latest poll, Nikkei found that Abe's support among 18-29s was 63%, among 30s 56%. Tight job market certainly doesn't hurt.

Interesting to see Koizumi Shinjiro, son of a masterful wielder of executive power, advocate for curbing PM's power and strengthen Diet's institutional power.

    3) To the extent Tokyo is still concerned about DPRK missiles - not unreasonable - pushing too hard on new BMD could spoil tentative outreach to Pyongyang and sour "peace mood" in NE Asia.

    2) Trade: given that Abe has turned to military purchases as a means of mollifying Trump's demands for balanced trade, would be awkward if Japan scrapped plans to buy Aegis Ashore.

    1) The Abe government may be pressed to explain whether Aegis Ashore is more about China than North Korea, which may be an open secret but is still uncomfortable for a government trying to make nice with Beijing.

This debate is fascinating for a few reasons, mainly because it could expose a fairly delicate balancing act that Abe government has been performing.

Also goes to show the extent to which India has become the biggest prize in the race to finance regional development, something that Tokyo is well positioned for.

India is thus far the largest recipient of AIIB lending, receiving about 30% of the total. Suggests that a) India's skepticism towards the BRI is more nuanced and b) the AIIB is probably not quite as much a tool of Beijing as initially feared.

All good points. The news implies that it took five years of record corporate profits and a tax hike -- and it's still short of the absolute level from 1991 (in a larger economy).
