I feel like airline systems would be fascinating to try to rearchitect using modern tech. Complex, interesting, realtime problems – both from a distributed systems as well as a human-computer interaction perspective – and the existing systems really aren't up to scratch ✈️

Go feels so refreshingly simple every time I come back to it after an extended period with other languages.

Comic strips seem like an under-appreciated and under-used communication medium. They can be so effective at explaining complex situations in a fun way, even about quite dry subjects. ✏️
Eg, I remember the one introducing Google Chrome fondly. google.com/googlebooks/ch

AirPods should notify you when the *case* is running low 🪫 So often I take the headphones out for a call, only to find them nearly empty because the case has been flat

If I could only have one kind of test, I would 💯% just have end-to-end tests that can run continuously against any environment, checking that the things actual customers want to do work. The feedback loop is longer than unit tests, but the ROI very high.

There are some rough edges, but man, generics make programming in Go so much more pleasant. 😌
Nice to see the language adapting while being thoughtful about keeping things relatively simple.

Not sure if this is a controversial opinion or not: unit tests should make up a minority segment of your overall automated test suite
I'd absolutely take a project with integration and no unit tests over one with unit tests but no integration tests

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” – Helen Keller

It’s remarkable how much more progress I’ve made in a few months’ (consistent) self-directed French learning than I made in 5 years at high school. Modern tools like Duolingo, Lingvist, and the podcasts and YouTube videos folks put out for free are an incredible combination. 🇫🇷

From research we’ve done with passengers this is incredibly useful, especially for those with social anxiety, or even if you’re just exhausted after a long day at work ☺️without this, most drivers tend to gauge passenger communication preferences at the start of a ride anyway

I hope I'll never again take for granted: eating in restaurants, BBQs, going to the countryside/seaside, going to a shop, hanging out with friends, seeing others hang out with their friends. The world is quite a wonderful place.

what if you could retire at a college campus designed for retirees? there'd be on-site housing, services, cafes and restaurants. courses like silversmithing, philosophy and machine learning would be tweaked to optimize for enjoyment (over attainment) and taught mostly by retirees

In a few weeks I’ll be leaving Monzo, and after spending a summer in (I hope) Mexico, I’ll be joining something new and very exciting in the autumn.
More on what that new role is closer to then, but for now thank you and stay awesome. ✌️

It’s been a privilege to be part of building these last 6 years. The people there have made me a better professional and a better human, and together we created something that often seemed, in the most exciting way possible, crazy. 🚀
But it’s time for something new.

What tools are commonly used to produce, store, and (later) analyze very high-frequency telemetry data? I'm thinking tens if not hundreds of data-points per second per series, so this is likely a file format + tooling around it rather than an online system. 📊

It’s a shame YouTube seems to make so little of its unique position in music. Lean into the fact they have so many great sets (not just tracks), improve the absolutely horrendous UX of YouTube Music app, etc.
