try uploading favorites to https://gfycat.com/ , see the difference in filesize. smaller filesize better for mobile, cheaper storage

Big Data reason: don't know about JS or browser webm players, but I'd bet my right buttcheek its easier to get analytics on webm over GIF

analytics like # of loops — GIF is just viewed as "load an image", I imagine its very hard to detect. webm also gives user stop/start ctrls

You can still save webm, though: Right click the video, "Copy Video Location", open new tab and paste+go, save. But it's a PITA.
