right, and i thought this to be almost too simplistic, like... you might get one more month of the economy humming about like normal but at the cost of huge spikes in cases and many deaths. unless the belief (read: denialism) is that it won’t really happen?

I think it's a perfect storm of anti-intellectualism, religion, and authoritarianism. If you instinctively distrust science and expertise and intelligence, and also think your strong-man is infallible; then your brain requires you to filter reality very aggressively.
