In fact, most of the studies I looked at didn't control for obvious things like caloric intake. Surely sitting at a desk all day is associated with more snacking! This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of unhealthy habits they'd need to control for.

What would convince me? A randomized trial. At the end of the day, I think there are just too many confounds. I'm also skeptical of the self reported data, but let's move on.

Let's assume sitting does independently increases mortality. The next question is, are standing desks an effective intervention? The effect dissipates over time, and in the medium term only reduces sitting by 90 minutes a day. Not bad, but is that enough? https://www.cochranelibrary.com/content?templateType=full&urlTitle=/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD010912.pub4&doi=10.1002/14651858.CD010912.pub4&type=cdsr&contentLanguage= …

Finally, is standing in front of a computer that much better than sitting? One estimate I found was that standing for 8 hours only burns an additional 40 calories a day. Maybe it's not energy expenditure that matters,

but it just seems too good to be true that standing for an extra hour is so much better than sitting. At the end of the day, I think it's plausible being sedentary is bad, but I predict it will have a smaller effect once disentangled from other variables.

I'm even more skeptical of standing desks, and I don't think the current exuberance is justified by the evidence.
