Serious American equitique question: it happened several times to me, someone mentioned once "we should have dinner some time" but never followed up after. Is it just a polite gesture? Or I was supposed to follow up?
it's a usually only a polite gesture. counts doubly so for new yorkers, e.g. like "we should get coffee/a drink/a meal some time", it's a formality that you'd probably never really follow through on

Got it. Thanks! We should have coffee some time to chat about cats and new yorker equitique? I am semi serious.

Where I live it is meant sincerely but with no specific follow up or timeline expected.
