This seems like perfect time to set up a promotion/relegation system for the NBA. Get rid of divisions and conferences, just have top 20 teams in the top league and the bottom 10 in the bottom league. Bottom 4 in top get relegated down, top 4 in bottom get promoted up each year.

12 teams make playoffs, with 4 first round byes. First round 3 games, second round 5 games, semis and finals 7 games. Compelling stories everywhere with teams fighting for playoff seeding and teams on the bubble to get sent down to bottom league.

What's the point of divisions as things stand right now? And honestly what's the point of the regular season? This year shaping up to where top 4 seeding in the West actually might matter a bit, but as a whole, there's still only going to be 3, maybe 4, teams with title chance.

The NBA, offseason aside, is just too predictable. Especially with 7-game series each round. I miss the 5-game first rounds with more volatility and chances for upsets.
