As a nonnative English speaker, I still struggle with some words despite living in the US for fifteen years. Reading this thread not only made me laugh but also feel less alone and self-conscious. Solidarity

Lol it’s the least straightforward language i know to pronounce
You can never get complacent. -
After about my first 3-4 years in the UK I think, I mastered how to pronounce non-words. So I now know how to say, e.g., every medication in both Cypriot Greek and English. So it's cALpol in UK, but calPOL in Cyprus, mefeNAmic in English, mefanamiKO in Greek, on and on.
-
You'd think it's a useless skill, but I take a lot of medications.

-
To be clear though, I don't drink calpol, in case anybody was worried.

-
I Googled it just to check, because I doubt you have it in the US and this is in the news. I'm dying.

I have it now in all languages I speak

-
Oh, my Greek is so bad. Embarrassing. I Google every other words and make up my own calques.
-
I've basically stopped speaking Russian after multiple people had commented on it. With my parents I just substitute Dutch/English as needed
-
Oh. That's sad. I still talk because fuck people. TBH sadly people when I was fluent used to say I can't speak Greek well but only after they found out I'm not "100% Cypriot". Racism is a strong drug.
-
Uh that's annoying. No regrets about Russian, don't have many great memories / feel like I belong anyway
-
Sorry and glad/hope you do now! I know what that's like. It was very tricky growing up for me because I was always confused, bullies, and didn't really fit in or feel accepted. I counted down the days till I could move to the UK thinking it would be more accepting of me.

-
Yeah it was similar for me and it was a long journey but I'm all good now
your experience in the UK doesn't sound as welcoming as it could have been though
