I really hope this advice is heeded by those in #PhDchat and #AcademicTwitter generally. It's not just a problem in academia of course, but it certainly starts there as much as in middle-/high-school.
Learn to code!

Yes - so long as we’re all aware of these different fronts. It’s more complex than a one size fits all plan......but that’s the real world with real humans right there!! Thanks again for the thoughts

Yeah, I want all of them to listen to my advice and weight it as appropriate.

I would never tell somebody who heard what I have to say and decided it's not for them "you are wrong" — but I also won't stop myself saying "I think you should learn to code" as a general piece of advice, "I think you could learn how to code".

I really agree (more strongly after this conversation) that everyone should TRY to code. They definitely CAN!! If they chose not to use those skills, then that’s fine, but to close the door without giving it a whirl is very limiting. I agree it should be a school subject.

Also since we're here talking about "maths vs art" and school... you MUST MUST read Lockhart's Lament if you haven't already! It's literally everything I believe with respect to this issue. I bet it'll be the best thing you've read in weeks if not months: https://www.maa.org/external_archive/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf …

I haven’t read it!! Bookmarked for my train ride tomorrow morning

OK, if you don't think it's awesome I'll eat my hat.
