I learned some programming in my undergraduate course. I think it contributed intellectually. But today I never use it practically. And that's fine. The best course was Lisp. The exercise book was brilliant. Every ten pages it said "Now take a rest and a peanut butter sandwich"

I actually started https://www.codecademy.com last year

I have research questions that require coding to answer and I want to be able to address them myself (not be dependent on others who can code). I’m not there yet, though. Need much more training and practice.

Replying to @IrisVanRooij @o_guest
I would really like to be able to quickly build Arduino prototypes myself. Also, I once bought an old timer scooter bike when I was 16 which sat in the shed for 2 years because I was too clumsy to repair a broken brake cable. So what can I realistically expect from myself here?

I hate to be one of those HACKATHONS LOL people, but I joined one, even though I should not have the time for that crap, and learned myself to arduino over that weekend. Granted, I accomplished little else but holding the team back :)

Wow — nice work.

well to be fair i had a bit of programming chops already, and some very good team mates who were quite helpful. But there is definitely something about dedicating a full weekend with someone else and a purpose

In any case, you just got applauded by
@o_guest simply for annoying the hell out of your team mates for a whole weekend and probably blowing up a couple of Arduino's along the way. Lucky bastard!! :-) (I PROGRAMMED A RECURRENT BACKPROP NEURAL NETWORK IN C++!!!)1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -
Come to think of it my personal challenge with Arduino and such is not the programming - that is often the easy bit. It's thinking about appropriate resistance, how to create, say, something that 'gradually warms up in your hand', and soldering without setting the room on fire.

Oh, snap! I programmed a backprop through time in C with a GUI.
