I don't fully agree with that as if you're used to for loops and want to transition to R you might make it harder for yourself. But in general yes. Don't mix too many paradigms like jumping from functional to object oriented is tough.

Yes, R is probably the best for stats. But I do all my stats in Python, so it's not like I'm missing anything by ignoring R.

Yeah, I'd argue some vague theory is useful too. Like space and time complexity, big O notation, how compilers and interpreters work and JIT, why some stuff is faster because its from BLAST LAPACK, etc.
