I am going to talk a little about something that — yes, I know, I talk about it a lot — but it's been especially playing on my mind lately:
Learning how to code.

In fact being able to code is what saved my life (100% literally) at least twice. It's why I still have a job in science, it's also how a landed a PhD place.

So yeah, just do it. Even if you get stuck on what a for loop is or have trouble understanding logic tables or object orientation. It is worth it. Learn how to code.

Sorry to all those who have missed out on careers because your undergraduate courses didn't bother to stress coding.
I am trying to change this for the next generations, and you can fix this for yourself too. It's never too late.

I dream to be able to code! Any tips please? Thank you Olivia
-
Just try as much as you can with what is there online and then maybe try out a class in person. Do they have any classes (maybe
@swcarpentry?) like that near you? -
I don't think we have those classes here in egypt but might be in Europe since i'm going to do PhD there. Any book you recommend for coding for biomedical researchers? Thank you for your great help.
-
Ah, no idea. Sorry, not in biomed. What kind of data do you expect to deal with? If it's stats I'm assuming there's an R community...?
-
Basically, imaging data. Functional parameters like flow or turbulence will be extracted and algorithm should be developed to convert those parameters into "sound". I'm so greatful for your valuable inputs. Thanks Olivia.
-
That could be done in any language. I'd reach out to your peers/colleagues to see what they use.

The entirely of my career was based on a small amount of coding knowledge and a concomitant talent for data analysis. If I hadn't taken intro to comp sci as an undergrad I don't think I would have ever gotten I to graduate school.

Recently, it's been playing on mind cos I've noticed the stark contrast between my peers/friends who know how to code (even if just a wee bit) and those who do not.
