Yeah, I probably should have. I tried to exchange sympathetic looks with the female student, to show I was sorry that she had to sit through that, but it probably wasn't enough

They are much worse in this case. That 'is' abuse or at very least sexual harassment being inflicted upon the female PHD.

It creates a hostile environment, which is not OK and is illegal in some places.

It's important to either challenge this sort of thing and, or report it, and any other sort of bullying / intimidation / harassment (admittedly that may not always be easy), because otherwise those older profs / perpetrators will continue to act in this damaging way!

Yes wholeheartedly agree those are the people who officially should not be standing by, to do so is to be complicit via lack of action.
