A friend just called very distressed. A colleague at uni has killed themselves out of a burnout, depression. My friend is very anxious about their own mental health. What have we allowed universities to become? We are all responsible for this, we must take action now.

That's so horrible, I'm so sorry to hear. Does your friend have access to some prof help / support?

Yes, their university is offering help, but it seems people feel very hesitant to use their own university's services.

I was also hesitant. The extra complication is that burnout causes high levels of anxiety & social isolation which creates huge obstacles to seeking out help. From personal experience I’d say it is vital to get help.

But 1st—one will probably be told this when getting help—if in the midst of burnout one needs complete time out & relaxation in a safe space, just to get cortisol levels back to normal again. Never realized how hormones can make one’s view world so totally diff (scary & black).

Yes, seeking help should be paramount, unfortunately sometimes ppl just don't, for many reasons. We need to provide both a safe working environment, free of ridiculous demands and help if needed.

Also really sadly sometimes the help isn't up to snuff and women are told "to grow thicker skins" or "work less" when the truth is something else entirely.

BTW not just women of course!

I realize I’ve been very privileged. I had an excellent occupational doctor who was very aware of burnout symptoms, stages, treatment, etc. and very supportive (plus I got support from a stress coach). I can’t (nor dare) imagine where I would be now if that had not been the case.
