In the past year, several people have reached out to me after reading this thread to ask me if anything has changed. Usually they're applying for Penn State's Philosophy PhD program. https://storify.com/readingtheend/abuse-in-the-penn-state-philosophy-department …

Short answer: No. My worst culprits are gone, but worse people came in just as I was leaving.

After years of not accepting Black students (I'm serious.), they made a big push for recruitment that was tied to reopening the Department to admission. It had been shut down for a few years because of all the lawsuits.

What worries me now... And I don't care if I ever get back into the field... I don't want to.

There's a white guy who's well-known for critical race theory. He makes a big point of how he only directs the dissertations of Black women. I thought that sounded good, and it's used to recruit people.

Turns out he's known for sexual predation with young Black women. I don't know anyone directly involved, but DO know folks from his former department. I don't think I risk getting anyone in trouble here.

And it's a VERY open secret. He's an elderly white dude, and he brings a new 20ish year-old Black woman to all the department events. I did see this happen personally, as he was being recruited the year I was leaving.

The above is why I don't think I can get anyone he has power over in trouble. Everybody knows. Just... I don't care about burning bridges in philosophy, so I'm free to talk about it.
