I understand that kind of thinking to a certain degree but not a whole lot to be honest. Perhaps recognition shouldn't be the ultimate goal? Idk. Overall, I do not believe in proprietariness of data/methods/ideas/... I think.

This is mostly legacy & people accepting what they're taught by their mentors for as long as they continue to benefit from it. I had this argument w my advisor when I was a PhD student. The idea of making your experimental data publicly was so alien to him. It was just not done!

I don't think greed is the only thing that explains this behavior/perspective. It's fear of the unknown, being risk averse, status quo bias, etc. as well. What you know is safe.

and in the dark and lacking incentives to change. your description seems (to me) to attribute it to the individual whereas i think it's a cultural issue. that's what i was trying to convey at least.
