1/ I have a meeting with a #student "#advisor" today, and I haven't spoken to one of these in about 4yrs since I had to leave my studies. All I remember from it is how discouraging + pedantic the person was.
So 80% of my (to be had) dialogue with this person will be things like:

2/ - I don't want to hear "Maybe try something easier" - We don't want to set you up for failure - Maybe look into help given to minorities - Are you sure you want to do this? You're a single parent I've grown a lot of guts and lost a lot of patience the last 4 years

I actually am not sure what an academic advisor is...
I guess we call them tutors in the UK? I'm not sure that's the same person as the one you're going to talk to though.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

Oh yea a tutor here is someone who helps you with topics you struggle with in class, academic advisors are the people you meet with before you start classes to "hash out" the proper way to do it and figure out if you need any extra classes or whatever

Yeah, tutors and advisors are a bit different (as someone with exp in both systems). Advisors are more about helping you plan your degree/classes, which is more necessary in the North American system since there the undergrad program is less set out (much, much more flexibility)

In UK, faculty are assigned as a tutor to a few students per year--stay as their 'tutor' throughout the degree, have small group discussions and generally check on how the student is doing (not the same as what tutor means in North America)
