The saddest thing (for them) is that I can't really interact with the majority of men from Cyprus because they don't believe, flat out, that I am a scientist.

Err... What? Really? Cyprus is a modern society with y'know, TV and internet and stuff, so they must be aware that women CAN be scientists, right? So, do they just think you're lying? Why would they think that? Sorry, not trying to be obtuse - genuinely puzzled.

They think I'm lying when I say my brother is gay and I'm bi. They think I'm lying when I say I don't believe in God.

It's incredibly sexist, one of the most religious countries on Earth, very fucked up. The government gives every man an AK.

How bizarre. I struggle to imagine how prejudice can make people so... blind. That sounds really sanctimonious - I'm sure I have my own prejudices/blindspots etc. But still - bizarre.

I guess for me, because I grew up with it, it seems normal. Infuriating in the past, for sure, but normal. It's why I'm so divorced from my own culture and living in the UK. I'm not just compatible in many many ways. The surname doesn't help either.
