One of the best young scientists I know interviewed in an all-male department that is eager to hire her and told her repeatedly that she was "cute" and "tall and beautiful". What were they thinking?!?

With time, men in all-dude departments lose the ability to communicate professionally with women scientists. They think it's OK to comment on physical appearance.

This is where administration needs to step in. Merge programs, do a cluster hire, something, because you’re right, it’s unlikely to change on its own

I agree. Balancing the prop. of men and women may dilute the chances of observing this hideous behav but it won't prevent it or protect women from it, particularly those who would be in proximity to these vermin, who would probably be exposed to sexual harassment on a daily basis
