yeah it's a behav that exists very much at the niche end of the arsehole academic spectrum. The first time I came across it, the msg was all "it's tough out there, you gotta defend your turf, here's how". Never realised how much some sci's hate each other, but I soon learned.

The funny thing is, it often seems to be ppl who do trivial stuff that fight the dirtiest. Knew a guy who had a long running feud with another guy over some meaningless (to me) detail of the ergonomics of the way people use computer mice. Honestly the amount of heat generated...
