So a bit of both... I see. Some of the peer-level (and above of course) fan-boying (and -girling/-peopling, although I see more men do it) is exactly what creates (or will create) the new "in" people.

It's very upsetting to watch in many cases and IMHO, esp since it's currently powerful people who have selected who are the new "in" people. Everybody, or at least, many seem glad to create the new "chosen people" while also complaining about the current "chosen leaders".

It's disconcerting, at least and disheartening and depressing at worst, to watch people who appear to decry nepotism (when probed at least), actually actively help propel the new "golden boys" into the "club". I guess that's people for you.
