Asking me if I want kids at work/work-related event (e.g., conf dinner, official work drinks, etc.) even if it is a peer, is not the most welcome question in many cases. Insult to injury when I say "no" and you come back with "your hormones will kick in and you will want them".

Do not be like that. They wouldn't have asked a man this question and not have told a man, had he said no, that "his hormones will kick in". I have actually stopped taking people seriously/talking to them for these aggressive assertions and insertions into my private life.

If you think I will have kids no matter what "because hormones" then why ask me? Kindly fuck off.

I have got passed child bearing age. I get "why did you never have children?" I reply because I never wanted them enough. Usually shuts them up. I don't hate kids love my nieces and nephews but why do you have to justify yourself?

A very pointed 'No' with clear full-stop and no further discussion/comments usually kills the topic stone dead - unless someone is a completely atonal prick. If it's any consolation, it tails off when you get to 40.

It's one of those awful questions that either ends in "you'll change your mind" or a demand for a detailed reason why not, followed sometimes with a telling off for being selfish for not having kids (which I've never understood). I also need to learn how to say a sterner 'no'...

My wife and I recently moved to France from the UK. This would happen to her sometimes there, but seems to a lot more often here. Her answer: "I'm considering getting a dog"

HA ha I know this feeling. Best is to think that the one who asks has no idea about the benefits we have. One being the amount of peaceful sleep we get :p

The two most recent cases were: a man without kids, and a naive 20-something child man. So definitely not predicated on jealously. Just misogyny at a basic implicit level.

Surely just you and your partner, everybody else is irrelevant. Employers asking is illegal in many cases here.

I always say...Maybe it's because I never wanted them or because I did and it broke my heart that I couldn't. Either way, it's a personal question that has no business in the work place.

I feel like the only time this question is appropriate is in a discussion with your partner/spouse/significant other. Otherwise? Don’t ask.
