Yeah it's entirely possible that they "only" had to write down high level descriptions of algorithms etc. and I was sufficiently naive about programming at the time that I didn't understand the difference! (I didn't really learn to program until after my undergrad)
People pointing out potential innuendos and being sarcastic/mocking me for them in my speech was really common in compsci. Since emigrating to the UK it's been something that really confused and upset me. It stopped when I left compsci. Interesting that you also did it here.

And it seems like I was right that they didn't want to participate and you wanted them to. I just used "reject" and you assumed I was hinting at a romantic rejection.
