Sunbeds & umbrellas, along with other paraphernalia of the tourist industry still litter the beach of Varosha. Bedding still lies on the beds of the hotels, & curtains are still drawn over the windows.pic.twitter.com/ol322b3xaF
After decades of abandonment, images from Google maps tell you all you need to know: the shining white rooftops of Famagusta in the north, & the blackened husks of Varosha in the south.pic.twitter.com/xxgxqHsIo0
It's hard to say what the future holds for Varosha. The city has fallen between the cracks of international diplomacy, held as a bargaining chip for decades, its life on pause. Meanwhile, the sea & winds batter it, & turn the once thriving tourist resort into a crumbling ruin.pic.twitter.com/JLTJmzktPs
Every ruined place is somewhere where the future was one day cancelled. Varosha seems to wear that future more visibly than any other place, a future that never had a chance to live but lives on only in the traces left behind.pic.twitter.com/Yt27kd1EZz

Cool feature on my home country. My great aunt and uncle were on their honeymoon there when they had to flee in 1974. I feel like you could have done a slightly better job explaining that Turkey invaded to protect Turkish Cypriots from genocide as they were bound to protect them.
No one side is completely innocent, but my side the Greek Cypriots, get off very lightly in the international stage given they tried to eradicate a whole ethnic minority.
Turkey invaded to protect Turkish Cypriots but was this the reason for the invasion or the excuse? Some TCs I talk to think it was an excuse and feel they've been fooled/used.
We have all been fooled and used.
The occupied areas are not recognized by UN because Turkey simply invaded a 2nd time for no reason. 15 July - the greek coup, 20 July Turkey used it as an excuse and occupied smal areas and during peace talks 14th August Turkey invaded with brutality against no amy - Varosha lost
