It sounds like you don’t actually know how to mentor and reach out to students whose career goals don’t mesh with what yours are. almost like you shouldn’t be mentoring undergrads or something, since you can’t consider them human enough to value their decisions.

If you think every student should be that A+ student regardless of why they are taking the class or doing research for you, you need to sit in your discomfort and realize not every student needs to have your priority set in order to be respected

calling students narcissistic or entitled bc they “aren’t willing to put in the work” is a smokescreen for problems that are really just about your own perceptions of student’s lives. not everyone is an undergrad for the same reason. Not everyone wants an academic career.

If you aren’t prepared or don’t know how to reach out to students whose values don’t align perfectly with your own, you probably shouldn’t be a mentor and you definitely shouldn’t be writing trash hot takes on students. It’s 2018. Learn to punch up, not down.
