I don't understand people outside modelling who directly/indirectly state/imply computational modelling is easy. It's offensive in and of itself to say something one hasn't even really tried is superficially doable plus it's patently wrong about this specific type of work.

As an academic exercise, implementing a simple neural network in excel is not a bad idea. Done correctly you can visualize values changing. Not a bad homework assignment.

I mean, it's true in some ways but I'd loathe to teach it that way. In the past, I teach it by giving them a simple GUI (that I wrote in pygame or PyGTK/pycairo) that already does the bunk of stuff for them.
