Just wondering a) when the term “line manager” entered UK academia b) where it comes from, its original meaning etc (get in line?) and c) if we can all stop using it?

Thanks for this. Interestingly the wikipedia page says “He or she is charged with meeting corporate objectives in a specific functional area or line of business.” So “line manager” has been imported from the corporate world and infiltrated academia. Depressing.
