I have asked some Cypriot friends for history books (or just books) to have a look at to learn more and they gave me the same answer.

...and the funny thing is I have no idea what your friends might mean as it's likely they think what's out there is not right wing enough.

I am not sure. The one I have in mind is a Turkish Cypriot and fairly left leaning.

Ah, then, you are correct. BTW for more on related stuff see this old thread. My brother lived in Ankara for a bit and G/C extremists tried to kill him for that and because he's gay.https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/905823906010947584 …

A lot of the abuse was about how they wanted to have sex with him and then kill him. Sexuality is so different in the Middle/Near East. Anyway, the phone lines between Cyprus and Turkey are not connected up so it was sometimes tough to communicate.

Bizarre that they would do what they apparently reject (penetration of a man by a man) to him. It shows how people use sexualised acts as a weapon to humiliate. I am shocked and heartbroken for your brother

Replying to @maria_ndrnh @RemiGau and
The act of penetrating anything/anyone is seen as inherently masculine.

To me it is not bizarre but it is obviously upsetting. Outside the West masculinity has other, often equally or more toxic, forms.

This rejection BTW of the Western concept of what it means to be gay, by people outside the West, is why they come up with these convoluted phrases: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men_who_have_sex_with_men …

In Cyprus for example, gay men are seen as women by the worst sexists/homophobes.

Anyway, need a little break as this is always a tough topic. Hope it's been at least a little helped towards answering
@aeryn_thrace's original question.
