This asking for the whole of the history of Modern Cyprus. So I'll try to give a brief overview. They defined themselves as Greek (not as Cypriot) & as Orthodox Christian (not Greek Orthodox though, Cypriot Orthodox; they are autocephalous, amusingly).

@aeryn_thrace's question: the right-wingers wanted to united Cyprus with Greece (aka Enosis) and expunge the Muslim Cypriots (aka T/Cs).

Certainly. I can't even fit in that well with Cypriots in the UK TBH because The Church has a very strong hold on Cypriot-ness.

It's a spectrum as I never felt at home when I was there. I counted down the days to moving/emigrating to the UK to study.
