means it was a French imposition from the period when they ruled Mexico. Even though we kicked them out (what 5 de Mayo celebrates), the upper classes maintained close cultural ties that were then absorbed by the middle class.

. You’re right, of course. Kinda goes with the long held assumption that bilingualism makes you stupid, unless you belong to the upper classes where its an obvious investment requiring expensive private tutors!

Yeah, same with sociolects and diglossia. Although of course upper classes almost never are as diglossic as lower classes. This is a big reason why I avoid speaking Greek with Greek people.
