What's more, this reads as a personal attack on Science Sam, who was one of the people who actually helped me realize I could be my full self and succeed in science. Being connected with her and hundreds of other loud, proud women makes me feel like I belong in science.

I don't have data, but I do have anecdotes of people feeling like they belong more and whose passion for science is reinvigorated when they share it with others. If self-expression on Instagram can improve retention, it can take us closer to equality.

If Instagram can show random people on the internet that their ideas of who can and can't do science shouldn't be limited, then it's a small push toward equality. If Instagram connects women struggling with similar problems in academia, it helps with equality.

There are definitely valid criticisms about Instagram, that it can hurt the self-image of others, that people feel the need to feel perfect. However, Meghan's criticism is that women using Instagram for scicomm are wasting their time and energy. She has no data, just a sense?

Why disparage women for how they use their time when she could encourage men to do more online outreach? Why assume that those who do online scicomm are incapable of implementing change at the institutional or policy level? Her main goal seems just to undermine online scicomm.

What could be done instead? Online and other nontraditional outreach efforts could be recognized by institutions like
@sciencemag as meaningful outreach. Instead of discouraging women from doing "thankless labor", we could try thanking them.3 replies 34 retweets 340 likesShow this thread -
If you are truly an advocate for equality, you do not disparage, discourage, or punish affected groups for expressing themselves. You use your platform to amplify important voices, not to silence them.

Such a bold title for something that hasn't been fully investigated. Fortunately there are scientists who are trying to systematically study how Instagram affects perception of male and female scientists. Big surprise!

I really can't overstate how importance of the work that
@heysciencesam does. Most recently, she's been developing a video series with GE. She's not just posting selfies like Meghan Wright implies. Sam is truly engaging the public.https://twitter.com/GE_Canada/status/971719592279027713?s=19 …christine liu 🌿 two photon art added,

Theres so much toxicity and sexism in the article that perpetuates the idea that women are not serious scientists if we are feminine. Read this thread for a great breakdown:https://twitter.com/kyfialko/status/974386221752430593?s=19 …
christine liu 🌿 two photon art added,
Kristina Fialko @kyfialkoThis thread is an excellent response to this problematic article and I would highly recommend reading through it. One specific aspect that alarmed me in the op-ed was the patronizing language used and I want to expand on that a bit https://twitter.com/christineliuart/status/974364015009849344 …Show this thread5 replies 58 retweets 325 likesShow this thread
Thanks for all these tweets — much needed to address this as it's pretty fucking toxic rhetoric.
