If you invite someone for a talk abroad, but don't have the financial means to cover their travel costs, please be upfront about it. Two stories this week of junior colleagues who were invited, spent time thinking/discussing/planning, only to later hear there was no budget.

Not as dramatic but also irritating is when trying to get reimbursed is a major bureaucratic hassle.

Also: webcam talks work quite well as an alternative if nobody has the budget but both parties still wanna give/hear a talk.

They're strange for speaker (talking to their slides as opposed to an audience) & audience. I've been on both sides — but they are actually OK & work well. Important things are: test the setup (connection/sound quality, screen sharing), speaker will likely need headphones.

Science talks via Webcam are weird for the speaker: you find yourself alone in a room talking to your computer... Wait... I do that everyday already...

It's actually very unnerving because usually when you give talk you can see and hear the room and its reactions, etc. But yeah, you get used to it eventually.
