I use TweetDeck on desktop because it also has this effect. For now, anyway (as Twitter have bought it).

I know what you mean - it’s a bit... information overload. I had to turn a lot of it off.

I threw together a javascript that does something similar, but you can toggle show/hide more easily in notifications, and show/hide RT. I have another one that numbers tweets in threads. Someday I'll put them into an extension...https://gist.github.com/soychicka/d2f0221afd1d96c5f7f09144f283013e …
