One of the most unexpected and arguably most negative professional interactions I've had over the past few years was meeting somebody who said: "Hi, I haven't read any of your papers but I can't see why they were published nor what they add to our understanding". 
In some ways less, in some ways more. Also really depends on the country too.

yes, i should have considered that. I've only worked in the UK and france (a little)

In the UK, if I were to take skills outside of science I'd have to deal even more with sexism on a daily basis at work. So I guess not just country but specific subfield too.

Some companies in tech are great, but many, especially ones I'd ideally like to work with kind of suck.
