One of the most unexpected and arguably most negative professional interactions I've had over the past few years was meeting somebody who said: "Hi, I haven't read any of your papers but I can't see why they were published nor what they add to our understanding". 
The funniest thing is that even to this day events such as this don't stick in my mind and it takes conscious effort to recall them and even when I do they are misty. I had to send my friends emails from back then to check this story was true the first time I remembered it.
