Ooh interesting! It's hard to reverse-search icons, I'm learning. I saw some people doing it on their websites and I found it to be useful, but I may replicate it w/ different color underlines or something.

I'm having trouble finding a source for his comment, and find it hard to believe b/c custom stylesheet modification like that only started to be a thing with the rise of Firefox in the mid 2000s. Like you I think it has to be from earlier, but maybe meant something else then.
